TGPSC Group 1 Exam Pattern: The Preliminary Test and the Six Mains Papers

TGPSC Group 1 is decided in two stages. A Preliminary Test of one objective paper (150 questions, 150 marks, 150 minutes) selects candidates for a written Main examination of six papers of 150 marks each, plus a qualifying General English paper. Paper VI — Telangana Movement and State Formation — is the paper that sets this exam apart from every other.

Qualifying Papers in UPSC CSE and Group 1: What You Must Clear and What Counts for Rank

Each of these exams has papers that never count for rank but end a candidacy if failed. UPSC has three — CSAT at 33%, and the Indian language and English Mains papers at 25% each. TGPSC has one, General English, and APPSC two, Telugu and English, each with thresholds of 40%, 35% or 30% by category. The figures, and why these papers deserve real preparation, are below.

How to Use Current Affairs for TGPSC and APPSC: Daily, Monthly and What to Skip

For the state Group 1 exams, current affairs work best as two habits. Read a short daily edition for the national and the state news that bears on the syllabus, then revise from monthly compilations rather than from your daily notes. Read every story for its exam angle — what syllabus topic it touches — and skip what has no angle at all. This guide shows how to set that up.

Preparing for UPSC, TGPSC and APPSC Together Without Tripling the Work

UPSC Civil Services and the TGPSC and APPSC Group 1 examinations share most of their general studies — polity, economy, history, geography, science and technology, and an essay. Prepare that core once, to the standard of the hardest of the three, and add only what each exam asks alone — the optional for UPSC, the state for each commission. The official patterns show exactly where the overlap ends.

APPSC vs TGPSC Group 1: How the Two State Exams Compare

APPSC and TGPSC Group 1 share their shape — an objective first stage, then 150-mark written papers — but differ where it matters. APPSC screens with two objective papers and ends with a 75-mark interview after five merit papers; TGPSC uses one 150-question preliminary paper and six merit papers, including a full paper on the Telangana movement. Most of the general studies overlaps; the state content does not.

How to Prepare for the APPSC Group 1 Screening Test

The APPSC Group 1 Screening Test is two 120-question objective papers of two hours each, with a one-third penalty for wrong answers. That rewards three things above all — even coverage across every part of Paper I, steady practice for Paper II's aptitude sections, and accuracy under time. This is a plan built around those three, with the official pattern as its starting point.

Telangana History for TGPSC Group 1: A Study Order, Era by Era

Telangana history is easiest to hold in order: from the early settlements and the Satavahanas, through the Chalukyas, the Kakatiyas of Warangal, the Nayakas and the Deccan sultanates, the Qutb Shahis and the Asaf Jahi Nizams, to the political awakening of the twentieth century. Read it as eight eras, each with its notes, its practice questions and its place on the timeline, and the later movement papers make sense against it.

Negative Marking in UPSC and APPSC Prelims: When a Guess Is Worth Making

Both UPSC Prelims and the APPSC Group 1 Screening Test deduct one-third of a question's marks for a wrong answer. On a four-option question that makes a blind guess worth exactly nothing on average — but ruling out one option makes a guess worth a ninth of the question's marks, and ruling out two makes it worth a third. The arithmetic, and what it means for a qualifying paper like CSAT, is below.
