PrepShark (“we”, “the app”) helps you prepare for competitive examinations. This policy explains exactly what the app collects, why it needs it, who else sees it, and how to have it removed.
What we collect
Account information
If you sign in with Google, we receive your email address, your name and the URL of your Google profile picture. We do not receive your Google password.
If you sign in with your email address instead, we send a one-time link to that address. We store the address; there is no password.
You can use the app without signing in. In that case the app creates an anonymous account automatically, so that your study history has somewhere to be backed up. An anonymous account holds no personal information — only a randomly generated identifier.
What you tell us when you set up PrepShark
After you create your account, PrepShark asks a few questions to set itself up for you. Your answers are saved to your account as you give them, so that you can pick up where you left off if you stop part way; when you finish, they become your profile. We store:
- Your name, mobile number and state
- The exam you are preparing for, any other exams you add, and the year you plan to attempt it
- Where you are in your preparation, what best describes you (for example, college student or working professional), and how long you can study each day
- What you would like the most help with, if you choose anything
- How you heard about PrepShark
Separately from your profile, if you arrived through a link that carried campaign tags (such as an Instagram or YouTube link) or a referral code, we store those tags, the page you arrived on and the website that sent you. This is recorded once, from your first tagged visit, and is kept apart from the answer you gave about how you heard of us. Apart from this and the activity described under “When you were last on PrepShark” below, we do not store anything about your browsing.
Giving us your mobile number is not permission to send you marketing, by WhatsApp, SMS or any other channel. We do not verify the number, and we will not use it for marketing unless you separately and explicitly agree to that.
Your study data
This is synced to our servers so you do not lose it when you change phones:
- Which cards you have reviewed, how you rated them, and when each is next due
- Your multiple-choice attempts and whether they were correct
- Your study streak and the date you last studied
- Your daily goal, study-hours goal and exam date, if you set them
- A display name, if you set one
- Highlights, notes and bookmarks you make while reading a chapter, and the position in the chapter they refer to
When you were last on PrepShark
While you are signed in on the PrepShark website, we record when you were last active and which page you were on — for example, that you were reading a Polity chapter. It is updated when you move to another page and about once a minute while the tab is open and in view, and nothing is recorded while the tab is hidden. We keep only the latest time and page, not a history of every page you visit, and we record the page’s address only — never what you type into a search box. The Android app does not send this.
When you copy a long passage
On the PrepShark website, copying more than a sentence or so of PrepShark’s study material from a chapter, question, flashcard or current-affairs page is not allowed. When content protection is switched on and you try it, we record that it happened: your account, the page, how many characters were selected and the first line of what was selected. We use this only to enforce the Terms of Service against redistributing the material. Copying from your own notes and from any text box is never recorded.
What stays on your device
The following never leaves your device. It is not uploaded, and we cannot see it:
- Your scroll position within a chapter
- Your theme and reading preferences

Highlights, notes and bookmarks used to be in the list above. They are now synced, so that they survive a lost or replaced phone and so that a passage you highlight on a laptop is there when you open the same chapter on your phone.
They are stored against your account and readable only by you. The database rules that enforce this are the same ones protecting your review history: no other account can read them, and no administrator account is granted access to them either. If you would rather they stayed on one device, deleting a highlight removes it from your account everywhere.
Help & support
When you message us from Help & support, we keep your messages, any images or PDFs you attach, the PrepShark page you wrote from, and the topic you chose. The PrepShark team reads them to answer you. We also record which help articles you open, your answer to “Was this helpful?”, and searches in the help centre that found nothing, so we can improve the articles. If you turn on reply alerts, we store the address your browser gives us for sending them; turning alerts off deletes it.
Diagnostics and usage
The app reports crashes and basic usage so we can find faults and understand which screens are used. This includes your device model, operating system version, app version and, when the app crashes, a technical stack trace. It does not include the contents of your notes or your answers.
Why we collect it
- To schedule your revision. The app decides when to show a card again from your own past ratings of it. Without that history there is no schedule.
- To keep your progress safe. So a lost or replaced phone does not cost you months of work, including the highlights and notes you made while reading.
- To understand your preparation. We use these answers to understand your preparation and personalise your PrepShark experience. As personalised study recommendations are introduced, these preferences may also help tailor what PrepShark shows you.
- To understand how students find us. How you heard about PrepShark, and any campaign tags on the link you used, tell us which of our channels are working.
- To run and support PrepShark. PrepShark’s administrators can see each account’s profile answers, sign-up and last-active times, the page it was last on, and a summary of how much it has studied. We use this to understand how PrepShark is used, to see whether it is working for the students using it, and to help you when you contact us. Only administrator accounts can see it.
- To fix what is broken. Crash reports are how we learn the app failed on a device we do not own.
We do not sell your data, and we do not use it for advertising.
Who else processes it
- Supabase — hosts our database and handles sign-in. Your account and study data are stored here.
- Google — only if you choose to sign in with Google.
- Sentry — receives crash reports.
- PostHog — receives usage events.
- Vercel — hosts this website.
- Your browser's push service (Google, Mozilla or Apple, depending on your browser) — only if you turn on reply alerts. It carries the alert: who replied and the start of the reply.
Each of these processes data on our behalf under its own privacy terms. We do not share your data with anyone else.
How it is protected
All traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted in transit. Access to your rows is enforced at the database level: the rules are written so that one account cannot read another account’s progress, regardless of what the app asks for.
How long we keep it
Your study data is kept while your account exists. If you ask us to delete your account, it and everything attached to it are removed from our database.
Help & support conversations are kept for 6 months after their last message and then deleted. Images and PDFs in a conversation are deleted 30 days after it is resolved. You can delete a conversation from your messages at any time from its menu; the PrepShark team's copy is kept, under the same 6-month limit, so that a question about a payment or an account can still be answered. To have it erased sooner, ask us. Records of which help articles were read are deleted after 6 months.
Your rights
You may ask for a copy of your data, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted. Write to support@prepshark.in from the email address on the account and we will act on it.
Children
PrepShark is intended for candidates preparing for competitive examinations and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from them.
Changes
If this policy changes we will update the date at the top of this page. If a change materially affects what we collect, we will say so in the app.
