Why it is in the news

At the 77th Foundation Day of the Central Silk Board (CSB) in Bengaluru on 20 September 2026, Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh announced a target of raising India's raw silk output from about 42,000 tonnes to 60,000 tonnes by 2030-31, and making India the world's largest silk producer by 2028-29. He said production had grown from about 26,000 tonnes in 2014, and that demand for Indian silk is rising as China's output declines.

The exam angle

Issue: Can India raise silk output by about 43% in five years and overtake China, while improving quality and farmer incomes in a sector dominated by small growers and lower-grade multivoltine silk?
