Why it is in the news

Gaurav, one of the first eight Namibian cheetahs brought to Kuno National Park (Sheopur, Madhya Pradesh) on 17 September 2022, died around 4 pm on 21 September 2026. He had been rescued from the wild on 12 September with severe dehydration and muscle wasting. Field Director Uttam Sharma cited age-related problems; the exact cause awaits the post-mortem. Known in Namibia as Elton, he was a little over ten years old.

The exam angle

Issue: Four years in, can a translocated African cheetah population become a self-sustaining wild metapopulation in India, and does the effort justify its cost relative to other conservation priorities?
