Why it is in the news

On 5 October 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with Swiss President Guy Parmelin at Hyderabad House, New Delhi, during a three-day State visit timed to the first anniversary of the India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA), in force since 1 October 2025. The two sides signed five agreements — led by an MoU on a Migration and Mobility Partnership and an Agreement on the Exchange of Young Professionals — and identified new opportunities in military exchanges, defence production and nuclear energy. President Droupadi Murmu hosted Mr Parmelin at Rashtrapati Bhavan the same day.

The exam angle

Thesis: The India–Switzerland visit shows TEPA evolving from a tariff deal into an investment, mobility and technology partnership — but its credibility depends on delivering the pledged capital and resolving legal-certainty concerns.
