Why it is in the news

On 5 October 2026, at an emergency meeting of the Mecca Defence Alliance in Riyadh, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye agreed to move immediately to implement their collective defence commitments and to ensure the “rapid deployment” of agreed military forces and capabilities in Saudi Arabia, according to a joint statement shared by Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry. The deployment is to take place under “approved arrangements” and the laws of the three countries. It is the first activation of the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, signed in August 2026, which treats an armed attack on one member as an attack on all. The decision follows weeks of Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi cities and infrastructure and fighting for control of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

The exam angle

Issue: Activation of the Mecca Defence Alliance marks the emergence of a Saudi–Pakistan–Türkiye security axis in a West Asia where US guarantees are seen as less dependable — with direct implications for India’s neighbourhood and Gulf interests.
