Why it is in the news

On 9 October 2026 the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the Nobel Peace Prize for Navi Pillay, the South Africa-born jurist who has been a judge and president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, a judge of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Committee chairman Jørgen Watne Frydnes said the prize honours her efforts to promote international law “as it comes under attack”; it came on the 125th anniversary of the prize.
