Why it is in the news

On 5 October 2026, the Ministry of Communications (via PIB) released the highlights of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) report The Indian Telecom Services Yearly Performance Indicators for 2025-26 (position as on 31 March 2026). India's telecom subscriber base reached 1,330.58 million, internet subscribers crossed 1,092.79 million, and overall teledensity rose to 93.26% — but rural teledensity remains at barely 60%.

The exam angle

Issue: India has saturated urban connectivity and rapidly rising data use, yet rural teledensity of about 60% shows that connectivity growth no longer automatically closes the digital divide.
