Why it is in the news
A single bench of the Calcutta High Court (Justice Uday Kumar), in Sri Sayan Mondal v. State of West Bengal (CRR 2992 of 2023), reported on 29 September 2026, held that the requirement of “public view” under Sections 3(1)(r) and 3(1)(s) of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 “transcends physical space into the digital domain”. It set aside a police “no clue” closure of a complaint about casteist abuse on Facebook and ordered further investigation.
The exam angle
Issue: Caste humiliation has migrated to social media, but a 1989 law written for physical spaces, weak cyber-investigation capacity and low conviction rates blunt protection.
