Why it is in the news

On 6 October 2026, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched the Indian Navy's first indigenous Fleet Support Ship (FSS-1), named Surya, at Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), Visakhapatnam, laid the keel of the fifth and final ship of the series (FSS-5), and dedicated HSL's upgraded Slipway-4 and a new 300-tonne Goliath crane. Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu attended. Urging shipyards to go “beyond self-reliance” towards global competitiveness, the Minister said India's goal is to become a global maritime power.
