Why it is in the news

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) opened its two-day centenary programme, “Shatabdi Samaroh – Manthan”, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi on 30 September 2026, where Chairman Dr Ajay Kumar named “Trust, Transparency and Technology” as the principles for the Commission's next century. On 1 October 2026, the Commission's 100th Foundation Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address the closing celebration and release a commemorative coin, a commemorative stamp and the book “100 Landmark Judgements – Shaping the Policies of UPSC and Public Service Commissions in India”.

The exam angle

Thesis: A century on, UPSC's legitimacy rests less on its constitutional shield than on demonstrable process integrity; its next test is to export that integrity to State PSCs and to keep selection relevant to governance needs.
