Chapter Overview Map
Industries, IT, Tourism and Traditional Industries of Telangana
8.1 Industrial location
- Each industry is pulled by a different mix of raw material, power, water, transport, labour and market.
- Modern industry concentrates around Hyderabad, with resource-based nodes elsewhere.
8.2–8.3 Cement and sugar
- Cement plants cluster in three belts: Nalgonda–Suryapet and Tandur on limestone, and the Godavari valley.
- Sugar mills must stay near sugarcane; the historic Bodhan factory has been closed since 2015.
8.4–8.5 Pharma and electronics
- Pharma grew from a research and skills base around Hyderabad, from Patancheru to Genome Valley.
- Electronics and aerospace cluster near the airport and highways south of the city.
8.6 IT, ITIR and SEZs
- Information Technology (IT) is concentrated in the western Hyderabad corridor.
- An Information Technology Investment Region (ITIR) was approved for Hyderabad in 2013 but never implemented; most Special Economic Zones (SEZs) are IT zones around Hyderabad.
8.7–8.8 Tourism and handicrafts
- Tourism forms where an attraction meets access: Ramappa, temples on the Godavari, forests and reservoirs.
- Handicrafts stay in the places where the skill was inherited, such as Pochampally, Nirmal and Cheriyal.
Don't confuse
- An announced project or a signed agreement is not an operating unit.
- A syllabus term such as ITIR must be learnt together with its current status.
Notice how the branches move from industries tied to raw materials, to industries tied to skills, to activities tied to place. The Don't confuse branch holds the two status cautions used throughout.
