Classification of Elements and Periodicity

Why elements are classified

  • A chemical element consists of atoms having the same atomic number, meaning the same number of protons.
  • As the number of known elements increased, studying each element separately became inefficient.
  • Classification groups elements with related electronic structures and properties, making it possible to recognise patterns, trends and exceptions.
  • The periodic table arranges elements primarily by increasing atomic number and displays the periodic recurrence of chemical properties.
