Sound

  • Sound is a mechanical disturbance produced by a vibrating source and transmitted through a material medium.
  • Sound produces the sensation of hearing when its vibrations reach the ear within the audible range and sufficient intensity.
  • A vibrating tuning fork, vocal cord, loudspeaker cone or stretched string alternately compresses and rarefies the surrounding medium.
  • Sound cannot propagate through a vacuum because there are no particles to transmit the mechanical disturbance.
