Measuring Devices and Scales

Measurement: Basic Idea

  • Measurement is the process of comparing an unknown physical quantity with an accepted standard quantity of the same kind.

  • A complete measurement contains:

    • a numerical value; and
    • a unit.
  • The International System of Units (SI) provides internationally accepted standard units.

  • A measuring instrument detects, compares, records or displays the value of a physical quantity.

  • A scale assigns numbers, grades or categories to the magnitude or intensity of a phenomenon.
