Peasant resistance in Telangana developed largely against the oppression of landlords, jagirdars, zamindars and maktadars, especially through illegal exactions and forced labour.
Vetti and multiple forms of arbitrary taxation placed a heavy economic burden on cultivators and other rural communities.
Several local rebellions were triggered by specific grievances such as illegal taxes, land alienation, forced extraction of agricultural produce, religious coercion and landlord violence.
The agitations often involved peasants, tenants, agricultural labourers and, in some areas, tribal communities.
Organisations such as the Andhra Mahasabha and Communist activists later assisted some agrarian and tribal groups in recovering land and resisting landlord domination.
