Intensification of Telangana Movement: 2009–2014

  • The Telangana movement entered an intensified mass-mobilisation phase after the 9 December 2009 announcement by Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram that the process for forming Telangana would be initiated.
  • The announcement triggered widespread celebrations across Telangana, while political resignations in the Seemandhra region created a political and constitutional crisis.
  • On 23 December 2009, the Centre modified its earlier position and stated that the statehood process would proceed only after consultations and consensus.
  • The reversal generated renewed agitation and encouraged the consolidation of political parties, employee unions, student groups and civil-society organisations.
  • The Telangana Political Joint Action Committee (TJAC) was formed on 24 December 2009 to coordinate the movement and convert the statehood demand into a broader mass struggle.
