Constitutional Position of Hyderabad State

  • After the Constitution came into force on 26 January 1950, India had four constitutional categories of states:

    • Part-A: Former British provinces.
    • Part-B: Princely states with legislatures.
    • Part-C: Chief Commissioner areas.
    • Part-D: Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • Hyderabad was a Part-B State.

  • On 26 January 1950, the last Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan, became the Rajpramukh of Hyderabad State.

  • M.K. Vellodi became the Chief Minister of Hyderabad's civil government.

  • The territorial composition of Hyderabad State remained substantially the same as the former Nizam's Hyderabad province.
