Public Awakening and Intellectual Reaction

Emergence of Intellectual and Civil-Society Mobilisation

  • The renewed Telangana consciousness from the late 1980s increasingly moved beyond electoral politics into journalism, research, student activism, literature, cultural expression and civil-society organisations.

  • The central themes of this mobilisation were:

    • Regional discrimination in education, employment, irrigation and electricity.
    • Economic and industrial disparities.
    • Protection of Telangana language and culture.
    • Preservation of tribal and regional rights.
    • Documentation of Telangana's historical experience after 1956.
    • Articulation of a distinct Telangana identity.
  • Civil-society organisations generally adopted three broad methods:

    1. Ideological propagation
    2. Agitation programmes
    3. Political process
