British Expansion in India — The Big Picture
-
British expansion from the mid-18th century to the mid-19th century followed two broad methods:
- Military conquest: Bengal, Mysore, Marathas, Sindh and Punjab.
- Diplomatic and administrative subordination: Ring-Fence Policy, Subsidiary Alliance and Doctrine of Lapse.
-
The expansion transformed the English East India Company from a commercial organisation into the dominant political power in India.
-
The broad progression was:
- Bengal → financial base
- Mysore → South Indian challenge neutralised
- Marathas → major Indian political confederacy defeated
- Sindh and Punjab → north-western frontier consolidated
- Awadh and princely states → political control extended through annexation and subordinate alliances
- Neighbouring regions → strategic frontier expanded beyond the core Indian territories
