British Expansion in India — The Big Picture

  • British expansion from the mid-18th century to the mid-19th century followed two broad methods:

    • Military conquest: Bengal, Mysore, Marathas, Sindh and Punjab.
    • Diplomatic and administrative subordination: Ring-Fence Policy, Subsidiary Alliance and Doctrine of Lapse.
  • The expansion transformed the English East India Company from a commercial organisation into the dominant political power in India.

  • The broad progression was:

    • Bengal → financial base
    • Mysore → South Indian challenge neutralised
    • Marathas → major Indian political confederacy defeated
    • Sindh and Punjab → north-western frontier consolidated
    • Awadh and princely states → political control extended through annexation and subordinate alliances
    • Neighbouring regions → strategic frontier expanded beyond the core Indian territories
